A Call to Freedom!
Close your eyes. Then point a finger at a globe. Open them again. What do you see?
Most likely the place you are pointing at is a dictatorship.
There are 193 sovereign United Nations member states in the world. Yet the majority of these states demonstrate limited political and civil freedoms.
Most of them are led by oligarchs or as I call them, oli-Ogres who were not chosen in transparent elections. Many of them have repressive state security apparatus and countless political prisoners. (more…)

or Comb For a Beard
It is a miserable sight to those who read about this beautiful ancient country of Azerbaijan to be subjected to an appalling and uninvited sight in the cyber postings of the youth over Facebook and Twitter that rave about the arrested youth, fraudulent elections or biased national media.
Instead of focusing on important subjects, these so called cyber activists are forced to employ all there time to rant about ridiculous themes like freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, freedom of the press or freedom to practice one’s religion.
Let’s face it, who really needs these alleged fundamental rights? Will they provide food for the hungry or shelter for the poor? (more…)
Azerbaijan’s Facebook Dissident
Elnur Majidli a Strasbourg-based blogger and internet activist has been threatened with a 12 year jail sentence for ‘inciting hatred’. Index on Censorship’s Mike Harris interviewed Elnur at the Council of Europe as part of Index and the International Partnership Group for Azerbaijan’s lobbying efforts
Sitting in a coffee shop at the Council of Europe, Elnur Majidli proudly shows off on his netbook the Facebook groups that started the rare public protests in Azerbaijan on 11 March — “the Great People’s Day” — and are now being used to organise further protests.
Tens of thousands of Azerbaijani citizens are members of the groups that Elnur administers, which has led the Ministry of Security to set-up a special Facebook team to monitor web activists. (more…)
In case you were wondering… a little bit on March 11
It has been few days now that a group called “March 11- great nation day” was created on Facebook.
A group of over 20,000 active Facebook users were informed of its purpose. The creator of the group, Elnur Majidli who currently lives in France and is also the founder of European Azerbaijanis for Democracy organization says the aim of this group is to break mass hopelessness:
“The date March 11 was picked purely by coincidence. But it also coincides with Mubarak’s resignation marking exactly one month. On February 11th, Jabbar Savalan was arrested on charges of drug possession (that were planted on him) shortly after his call to people to come together at Freedom Square. On February 11th, while Jabbar was in prison, in Egypt, a dictator fell”. (more…)

What Is It?
The secret police of Azerbaijan
This morning at 5 am at the airport in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Norwegian journalist Erling Borgen and his cameraman, Dag Inge Dahl, wassurrounded by aggressive security personell.
They stole important documents from the Norwegian filmmaker.
They also stole and confiscated Mr. Borgens hard disk with six days of filming. (more…)

The best thing said about the Armenian tragedy was a sermon delivered in the main church in Constantinople in 1894, more than 20 years before it happened. Patriarch Ashikyan had this to say: “We have lived with the Turks for a thousand years, have greatly flourished, are nowhere in this empire in a majority of the population. If the nationalists go on like this [they had started a terrorist campaign] they will ruin the nation.”
That Patriarch was quite right, and the nationalists shot him (and many other notables who were saying the same thing). (more…)

As a young man, Abraham Lincoln went to war a captain and returned a private. Afterwards, he was a failure as a businessman. As a lawyer in Springfield, he was too impractical and temperamental to be a success.
He turned to politics and was defeated in his first try for the legislature, again defeated in his first attempt to be nominated for congress, defeated in his application to be commissioner of the General Land Office, defeated in the senatorial election of 1854, defeated in his efforts for the vice-presidency in 1856, and defeated in the senatorial election of 1858. As parliamentary elections approach in Azerbaijan, candidates go through the final registration process.
