Assault on Citizenship

In free societies citizenship is a privilege.

Since the era of the ancient Greeks, citizens held the highest esteem in the society.

This tradition was transformed into the period of the Roman Empire and continues in the modern free societies of the world.

Being a citizen comes with distinct rights and responsibilities for the individual. The identity of a Greek and Roman citizenry was conspicuously different from a non-citizen giving a distinct meaning to the concept of citizenship. Individuals living in Greek, Roman, even the Islamic societies aspired to acquire the status of citizenship in those states.

At the time of Muslim conquest of Europe citizens practiced far better rights and responsibilities than the non-citizens. Even then obtaining citizenship in those states required much effort and struggle. As in most cases citizenship was passed down through heredity, it was nearly impossible to attain such privilege. But tell me please, from it, what do we learn?

Freedom is not free, it only means ‘to be free’,
